In this video I have covered the very rare but very important setup black could employ against the London System – the Chigorin.

The Chigorin is characterized by the move Nc6, with which black develops the knight and at the same time blocks the c pawn. This means that black will not be able to attack white’s center with c5. What that means for a London system player is that there is no need for the move c3! The move c3 is usually played to support white’s London pawn triangle, but when c5 cannot be played it’s redundant.

Instead of playing in a normal London fashion, when facing the Chigorin white’s best setup includes playing the move c4 – striking at black’s weak center and at the d5 pawn and turning the tables.

Unlike normal queen’s gambit setups against the Chigorin, against which black can easily employ his plan of attacking with a ton of pieces, playing the London against Nc6 setups gives white much more safety and much more flexibility. I hope you learn something!

Let me know what you think about the video!
