Many chess players underestimate the meaning of the endgame and think that it is more important to be good in the opening and middlegame stage. However, many chess games rarely end in the opening or middlegame phase, which is why a basic understanding of king and pawn endgames is very important. In this series, you will learn basic principles and techniques in the endgame, in particular in king and pawn endgames.

In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy, will show you the most important principles in king and pawn endgames.

Basic endgame principles in king and pawn endgames:

Active King: The king should be active! Bring the king into an active position = Centralize the king. The Central position is usually the target.

Material Matters: Losing a pawn in the opening or middlegame is not a catastrophe. It can be compensated. However, in the endgame stage, losing a pawn can be fatal.

The importance of created a passed pawn as soon as possible: A passed pawn is the most important pawn in the endgame stage, because it can become a queen.

Active counterplay plus Activity of the King: Sometimes the activity of your pieces in the endgame is more important than the material advantage, but we know that material matters just sometimes it is not enough! So, it is possible that piece activity matters more than the material balance.
