In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy will take a look at the queen and bishop battery. This is a typical tandem on diagonals, which is used to attack the opponent's king.
Queen and Bishop Battery:
It is very useful to memorize this pattern, because the perfectly coordinated queen and bishop are very efficient in attacking your opponent's king and exploiting weak diagonals.
Fight for a diagonal:
Sacrifice e.g. a rook in order to remove the main defender of this diagonal. Afterwards use the queen and bishop tandem on the diagonal.
In some cases, it makes sense to occupy diagonals, which are not heading against the enemy king, because for the following reasons:
- The controlled diagonal is limiting your opponentβs resources and makes it possible to weaken his pawn structure.
- A strategic reason is to control the long diagonal, which is heading to the corner square and hence to increase the chances of controlling the a- or h-file with heavy pieces.
