Rook endgames are one of the most common and probably the most complex of all endings. There are a huge amount of theoretical positions and patterns, which makes it difficult for most of the chess players to remember all of them. However, some of these key positions occur very often in real games and if you know how to play or what plan to apply, you will increase your chances to win the game. Key positions like the Philidor, the Lucena or the Vancura positions should be studied, understood and even memorized, as sometimes you only need to know the technique in order to win or save the game. In this video, GM Alex Ipatov is covering the skewer method in rook endgames.

The skewer is an important element of pawn and rook endgames. The side with the pawn uses this tactical element in case the opponent’s king is on the 2nd or 7th rank. Learn how to create the skewer and learn defensive methods against it.

Summary:

The skewer does not work if the opponent's king is for example on g7 or h7. Then the position will end in a draw.

If the superior side has two extra pawns e.g. on a7 and g4 it is usually a draw, if the defending side is able to keep his king on g7 and h7.

If the superior side has two extra pawns e.g. on a7 and the f-file or h7 and c-file, this little detail will change the evaluation of the position so that the position is winning for the side with the extra pawns.
