Stafford Gambit | The Refutation - Daily Lesson with a Grandmaster 121

intermediate
Avetik Grigoryan (ChessMood)OpeningStafford gambit

The Stafford Gambit arises from the Petroff Defense after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 Nc6. Objectively it’s a dubious gambit but it offers Black good practical chances if White doesn’t know the best way forward. In this video, GM Avetik Grigoryan shows a simple and practical refutation of Stafford that is also easy to remember.

You will see the important ideas for Black and the typical Stafford gambit traps. Then, you will learn a simple refutation of this line. To help you memorize how to refute this dubious gambit in the Russian Defense, there is an important slogan that you can remember.

So is this gambit worth learning with the Black pieces? GM Avetik Grigoryan shares his opinion on this. Apart from being a pawn down, there are other downsides to it.

However, if you still wish to play this opening with the Black pieces, there are some useful sources you can learn from. All of this has been discussed in the video.
