In this video, GM Sam Shankland is starting a video series dedicated to the topic of Knight vs Bishop scenarios. In this first video, he is going to discuss the advantages of a single bishop against a single knight. You will see that the bishop is a long-range piece and it can influence both sides of the board at the same time. This becomes especially relevant when you are looking at an endgame, where for example one side has a pawn majority on the king side and the other side has a pawn majority on the queen side and you have a pawn race. The bishop will be much more effective than a knight.
When playing with a bishop in particular against a knight you really would like to fix your opponentβs pawns on the same colour as your bishop so that you can target them later. Furthermore, the bishop is clearly better than the knight in situations with an open board and an imbalanced pawn structure.
