This series is dedicated to attacking techniques and ideas which will help you to start decisive attacks against your opponent’s king. GM Dejan Bojkov will cover different situations which often appear in chess games, for example uncastled and castled king positions, opposite castled positions and many more. You will learn that every attacking piece counts and that the time is an important factor in every attack.
In this second video of the series, you will learn typical ways and strategies to attack the castled king.
Summary:
Castling of the king does not necessarily mean that the king is brought into safety. We can still attack the castled king and we typically have two plans:
1. The pawn storm which is clearing the Rook file with pieces and we are trying to open files, diagonals for them so that they can attack from far away and eventually bring them closer and deliver checkmate.
2. The pure piece attack: Sometimes we're mixing the two but the pure attack is usually happening, if we have two conditions:
- If the opponent’s king is weak or if there are weaknesses (for example all those pawn moves
like g6, h6).
- One important condition for our attack to be successful is the number of the pieces in the
attack and in the defense. If we have more attackers than defenders then the chance of a
successful attack is much higher, otherwise it usually does not work.
Two important factors for you to have a successful piece attack against the castled king:
1. Weaknesses in the opponent’s camp that you can use for your pieces. Your pieces can either attack them directly or you can use them to bring your pieces closer to your opponent’s king and to finally checkmate him.
2. The number of the pieces that you using in the attack should be higher than the number of the defending pieces (defenders).
