Having the control over an open files or semi-open file is considered advantageous, as it allows a player to attack more easily, since a rook or queen can move down the file to penetrate the opponent's position.

In this second video, you will learn how to mainly use your rooks on open files. Specifically, once you obtained access to an open file, how to make the most out of this advantage and give yourself the best chances of winning the game. Besides of that you will learn the famous “Alekhine’s Gun”.

- The famous Alekhine’s gun is basically two rooks and a queen aligned on an open file and the two rooks are in front of the queen.
- When you are controlling an open file, this extra control over the position gives your pieces a lot more freedom to attack different parts of the board.
- Sometimes controlling an open file is not enough to win the game: In some cases, you need to find a way to open a second front in order to attack a different part of the board. This is also related to the "Principle of two Weaknesses".
- Taking control over an open file using a tactical idea: This is often seen in the games of strong players. They may have seen a strategic concept like controlling the open file, but it must be justified by finding the right tactical idea at the right time.
