Sacrifices in chess are often hidden in the position. If you overlook them, you miss a tactical chance to win the game right away. Understanding the many types of sacrifices, and what types of positions are good to sacrifice from, is critical if you want to improve your game. Therefore, in this series, you will learn more patterns related to different sacrifices which often appear in chess games. Recognizing these patterns, will help you further to expand your pattern recognition skills.

In this video, IM Alex Astaneh will not only teach you what’s a sacrifice but also the different types of sacrifices and when you should go for a sacrifice.

What is a sacrifice?
Any move that gives up material, typically it’s a piece but it can also be a pawn, and in return for this material you get something. What is this something? Usually it’s some kind of tangible tactical benefit, e.g. an attack on the king, a fork but other times it’s also just a positional compensation. There must be some kind of pay-off in return for the material that you gave to your opponent. Sacrifices are also important tools for saving lost positions. Sometimes you can make a sacrifice just to avoid losing.

The purpose of a sacrifice: Either a tactical compensation or a positional/ strategic compensation.

There are a couple of categories of sacrifices: Real sacrifices and pseudo sacrifices:

- Real sacrifice: A real sacrifice is one where the player who sacrifices material does not actually see a way of getting this material back. But perhaps he sees long term positional benefits or something along those lines or a very strong attack. But that player is prepared to continue down material.
- Pseudo sacrifices: In case of a pseudo sacrifice, if it is being accepted by the opponent, the player who sacrificed material will either get back the material, often with interest or perhaps is doing something like checkmating the opponent’s king.

Two types of sacrifices: Forced and non-forced sacrifices:

- Forced sacrifices: A forced sacrifice is one where the opponent must accept it and if he does not accept it he will be in a lot of trouble.
- Non-forced sacrifices: A non-forced sacrifice is one where your opponent offers you a piece but if you don’t take it your position will continue to be perfectly playable.
