In this video I have covered the very important setup black could employ against the London System – the Grünfeld.

For the introduction to the London Systems, and other setups for black, watch the London playlist: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_OYdWbJMKM&list=PLssNbVBYrGcCjajrI7QtQi48nKOfy-W5O

The Grunfeld Defense is characterized by black fianchettoing his kingisde bishop and by playing the move d5, making a sort of hybrid between classical and Indian defenses against d4. The Grunfeld is normally a very sharp opening, and it leads to aggressive positions for black when white plays the main lines (with d4 and c4).

When played against the London System, though, it’s a whole new story. Against the London system, the Grunfeld setup is a great weapon to equalize with, and it gives black very easy play, and simple plans to go for. In truth, if black plays correctly, white really cannot hope for an advantage.

Still, for London System players, the Grunfeld should be an annoyance, but not a reason not to play the opening. Just remember that you don’t play for a quick kingside attack against it. The best plan is to play for a small positional advantage on the queenside.
