In this video I have covered a somewhat rare setup for black against the London system – the Queen’s Indian Defense setup, characterized by playing b6, and fianchettoing the bishop on b7.

In conjunction with that, black will play e6 and Nf6, giving himself a very flexible and solid position, which white won’t be able to attack easily. As opposed to the KID and d5 setups, the QID setup is very hard to break through!

It’s important for serious London players to know the difference between black’s possibilities, and to be able to adjust to them. Every setup requires a counter-setup by white.

The Queen’s Indian setup is divided into two main branches, positions with d6 and positions with d5 for black. They are different because of the control of e4 and e5, the key strategic and offensive squares in the position. I have covered both options for black, and hopefully shown how white should counter them.
