In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is going to show two common opening traps in the Exchange Variation of the Ruy Lopez.

The Exchange Variation is characterized by the following move order:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Bxc6 dxc6

If black tries to attack the knight after the moves 5. O-O f6 6. d4 exd4 7. Nxd4 with the move 7...Bc5, he falls into a trap which costs him the dark-squared bishop.

The second popular trap that can arise out of the Exchange Variation appears if black decides to castle long side after the moves 5. O-O Qf6 6. d4 exd4 7. Bg5 Qd6 8. Qxd4 Bd7 9. Nc3 Ne7 10. Qe3. After 10...0-0-0 black puts himself in a losing position.
