Once you have a material advantage, it is important to know how to convert this into an easy win. In this video, IM Kostya Kavutskiy will show you how to convert a material advantage into a straight win based on a few principles that you should keep in mind.
There are a few principles that you should keep in mind when you want to convert a material advantage in one of your games. The principles are:
1. Simplify the position as much as possible to make your winning task easy: There are a few ways to do this. The most straight forward way is to exchange pieces and try to go into some kind of winning endgame.
2. Reduce counterplay: You should think about how you can give back some material in order to maximize your winning chances. When you have extra material, it is not necessary to keep all of that. In fact many times a nice and winning strategy is to give back some material in order to consolidate the position and to make sure all of your pieces are getting into the game.
3. In the endgame, you donβt have to keep your extra material in 100% of the cases. Often you should look for some kind of endgame that you know is easily winning or give you very good winning chances in a position where you know that your opponent is not going to have much counterplay. Study a lot of theoretical and practical endgames so that you are familiar with one of the ideas and techniques of winning endgames and that you are able to transfer your advantage.
General:
A good example of how to demonstrate good technique in an endgame where you are up an exchange: You should try to trade pieces, create a passed pawn and try to make your task as simple as possible.
In rook vs knight or rook vs bishop endgames, the goal of the side with the rook is to create a passed pawn and to support it with the rook and with the king if necessary. Knights are bad in dealing with passed pawns, especially outside passed pawns and pawns on the a- and h-files (also known as rook pawns).
