In the first video of the series, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy is sharing with you some of the major variations in the King's Gambit. The main focus is here on the main strategies and plans for both sides in the different lines.
The King's Gambit is a very sharp and aggressive opening. White weakens his own king's position with the idea of gaining a lead in development, control over the center with a pawn majority and the control of the f-file.
The King’s Gambit is characterized by the moves:
1.e4 e5 2.f4
The idea behind white’s move 2.f4 is to challenge immediately the center with the pawn, in particular black’s pawn on e5 and to limit black’s options to answer to this move. If black defends his e5-pawn with the knight, then white is able to capture on e5 and to occupy the center in the next move, for example with the pawn move d2-d4. Another aspect of white’s move 2.f4 is that the f-file will be opened quite easily during the game. The drawback of 2.f4 is that the white king can be very vulnerable especially on the h4-e1 diagonal as well as on the a7-g1 diagonal.
